Alumni Impact

The funds collected under this head are utilized to support area of greatest need. It is also used to provide travel support and Cash awards to the students. 175 students have been provided travel support amounting to 94.88 lakh for attending conferences abroad and 171 students have been provided cash prize amounting to Rs 22.4 lakh for publication of their research papers in reputed ISI Web Journals for attending International Conferences during 2013-14

Due to the rising costs associated with academic activities at the department level and reduced support from government funding, the institute has established the "Departmental Excellence Fund" within each academic department and Interdisciplinary Program (IDP). These funds are dedicated to supporting a wide range of academic activities conducted by the departments.

The lecture series is an academic initiative initiated and coordinated by IIT Kanpur, made possible through the generous contributions and support from our esteemed alumni and other well-wishers. Through their donations, an endowment fund is established, and the expenses associated with organizing the lecture series are covered by the interest generated from this fund. As part of the lecture series, each department hosts one or two lectures annually, featuring notable experts in the relevant field.

The Alumni Fund is utilized to provide support for a variety of activities and initiatives within the Students Gymkhana, Science & Technology Council, Student Emergency Fund, Student Benevolent Fund, establishment and upkeep of the Tinkering Lab, as well as the creation of a fund specifically for the U.P. Shooting Championship. Additionally, the fund is instrumental in establishing over 100 scholarships and awards for deserving students.

Undergraduate students from IITK and other collaborating institutions engage in short yet intensive research projects, enabling them to surpass the boundaries of classroom learning and explore their intellectual capabilities. The program has a duration of 8 weeks, during which students working at IITK receive a stipend. The support for this program is provided through alumni funds.

The utilization of alumni funds extends to the recruitment of faculty members. Through the establishment of various Faculty Chairs and Young Faculty Research Fellowships, distinguished faculty members at IIT Kanpur, known for their outstanding expertise in their respective fields, are honored and provided with support. These awards serve as a recognition of their remarkable achievements and also aim to facilitate their research endeavors.

While IIT Kanpur prioritizes excellence in teaching and research, it recognizes the significance of addressing the needs of the local community and making a meaningful impact on their well-being. Several groups on campus have actively taken part in addressing various challenges faced by the community, and their initiatives have received support from campus residents, alumni, and the Institute. The contributions from alumni are channeled through the Institute's Endowment Fund, managed by the DORA office. Here are a few examples of such projects:

The Alumni Fund has played a crucial role in the construction of various facilities at IIT Kanpur. The New Activity Center now includes a squash court and a dedicated Yoga & Aerobics hall, both made possible with the support of alumni contributions. Additionally, the Outreach Hall and PBCEC Hall have also been constructed through the generous contributions of alumni. Park 67, located at the heart of the IIT Kanpur campus, is another remarkable gift from the alumni community. Moreover, alumni funds have been instrumental in the construction of several key buildings, such as the BSBE building, Environmental Engineering building, Computer Science buildings, and IME building. Notably, the Faculty lounge, which currently houses Café Coffee Day, is another facility that owes its existence to the Alumni Fund.
